Why does a traditional sauna cost more to run?

Residential electric heaters are often 4.5–8 kW and may run 20–40 minutes to bring a wood room up before the session. An infrared cabin is commonly 1.2–3 kW with a shorter preheat. The kWh gap is mostly nameplate and heat-up, not a wellness ranking.

Is the cheaper-to-run type cheaper to buy?

Not necessarily. Electricity is only the operating line. Traditional rooms, heaters, and 240 V work can cost more up front; infrared cabins have their own price spread. Use the optional purchase field to spread a dollar amount across sessions — it is not a market survey.

Can I compare them at the same session length?

Yes. Set both to the same minutes in the calculator, and decide whether heat-up is on. Equal minutes still is not an equal thermal experience; it is only equal clock time for the energy math.

Does this compare far-infrared vs near-infrared?

No. Wavelength is not an input. Enter the nameplate watts of the cabin you actually have (or are pricing). SaunaCost does not model spectrum, emissivity, or any physiological effect.
